Never too Old to Trick Or Treat


Magic Leg Warmers & Happy Halloween!

I know it's not much weight for many, but today, I FINALLY was able to hack-squat more than I weigh for 10 reps for 2 sets.
This was a huge milestone for me, and dang it, I'm going to do a happy dance in my magic pants.
Well, really, they are biking leg warmers.
Those awesome tights by Black Milk were $50 more than these.
These look just as awesome to me though.

Don't be a sourpuss

Hubby was home this morning due to a change in schedule.
So, I changed my schedule and went to the gym at a different time this morning.
Now understand, I'm a weirdo.
I admit that.
I walk into the gym, do my thang, but smile.
As I pass people, I just automatically smile and usually mutter a "hey" with a little head jerk.
You know, the old crazy lady doing the "what's up" motion.
I also spontaneously break out in a quick dance move between sets if an awesome song comes on, for the record.  Feel free to giggle at me.
I do this to the regulars that I see everyday, and the people I've never seen before, men, women, old, young, whatever.
I'm not looking for conversation.
It's just a pleasantry.
I lived in the south until 6 years ago.
To me, it's just natural.

Well, today must have been "ladies pissed at the gym day."
I got scowls, frowns, and even a turn, frown, hands on hips, lip smack when I said "Excuse me," with a smile, to grab a paper towel from the restroom while one chick was messing with her hair.  By the way, there's only one paper towel dispenser in there.
And she continued to stand and stare with her arms crossed as I went to the side, dried my hands, and put my stuff away to leave.
What's up with that?
I didn't realize things got territorial in the can now.
Is there a full moon or some other weird planetary movement that I'm unaware of that made today sourpuss day?
Hey, it's Friday; put a little grin on and get happy - or next time, I will drop pants and moon your grumpy butt.  Believe me I am not above juvenile actions to get a smile.

You smell of old people sex...

"What?" you ask?
Well, this is what one of my girlfriends told me.
You see in my quest to lift heavier and try to get bigger muscles, I overcompensated for my weaker left side with my right side and hurt my shoulder.  Nothing serious, mind you, but enough to warrant pulling out the BenGay.
Hence, the comment to which I added, "I also rolled around in moth balls just to enhance it."
We're so couth, aren't we?
In the meantime, I will  be doing a little lighter work and unilateral work to try and even out my strength differences.
This is why you'll notice the lighter workout log this week too.
 Getting silly
One day, you will see something there when I do that.

Let's chat

I read a ton and chat with folks on facebook in different groups of women who compete or are preparing to compete for the first time.
Sometimes, I am a little taken aback.
There are so many ladies eating 1000 calories or less a day while doing two hours or more a day of cardio and then lifting weights.
Many have spent months with nothing but protein and only certain greens.
Months.
And nothing else, no berries, no complex carb, no dairy, no nuts, nothing.
To me, even with my limited studies in nutrition (on my own and during my pre-med/respiratory classes), this is just not right.
Competitors are wondering more and more why metabolic damage is becoming more prevalent?
I could not believe living this way for so long.
I have also found more threads and more videos about the subject.
Check out this video from Scott Abel, who is a noted expert in the subject.



Anyway, it just concerns me that so many think having stricter and stricter diets each time and increasing cardio every time is just "hardcore." Common science tells us that the body and muscles need fuel to continue on.
~sigh~
This is why I continue to educate myself and work in the off season.
Yeah, I'm still tiny, but it's only been a little under a year.
I think that I'll continue to progress, and I'll be healthy about it.
I am so lucky that I found the coach that I did too.
We discuss all of these things, plus, she takes the time to educate me more in what is happening biologically with each food and the processes in the body.
And this is not saying that I know "everything" or even a lot, but it just amazes me that some people prep to compete on basically an anorexic diet and find nothing wrong with it.
But enough serious stuff.

On to the fun stuff!

This was so awesome today. I was at the red light by University and 1st/Speer. There were about 5 folks with homemade posterboards saying "YOU ARE AWESOME", a hand drawn thumbs up, and other positive sayings. I tried to snap a pick but they kept moving around. It was such a great idea and totally made me smile on my way to my coach.

 I'm maintaining still.
Yep, I was up one pound, but my muscle and fat are pretty much the same as they have been.
I'm at 93 pounds of muscle with the rest being, well, fat.
Still I'm in the 19% range.
 Here's a shot that I snapped there today.
Today was hectic afterwards.
I had to return books to the library.
Picked up a few more.
Left there and met the hubby and friends for lunch.

Oh yeah!
Then, I ran errands.
Picked hubby up from work and headed south to pick up his truck.
I got home as he went north to pick up parts for the Peanut.
I got home, let the doggies and ferret out.
Unloaded the dishes, washed dishes, did the floors, took out compost and stirred it up, watered what's left of the veggie garden, prepped for dinner, and took care of a few other odds and ends.
Whew!
Now, I'm waiting for hubby to get home.
We'll chow, and I'll be ready to shower and hit the sack.
I'm such a wild woman on a Friday night!

Love weeks like this

I've just been doing my thing this week.
I love that when I went for a check in this week my body fat went down again, my muscle went up, all my measurements changed, and my weight has stayed the same for three weeks now.
It just shows how your body can continue to change even if you do not see loss on that stupid scale.
=)

I have read many books on the subject, but I grabbed a few more at the library and have been reading.
Probably, oh four or so years ago, I was back to vegetarian, then vegan, then I did Raw vegan for about three or four months.
The information and studies really do interest me.
Now, do I plan on going full on Raw again, or even vegetarian or vegan?
The answer is probably not, but I would like to incorporate a good bit more raw into my diet.
I really do try not to cook my veggies to death, but I'm sure that I'm sucking out most of the nutrients by the time that I'm done.
Plus, I've discovered that there are quite a few veggies that I actually prefer the taste of raw to cooked, so what's the harm?
Besides, I could use a little more energy and nutrients in my life.
Too, I'm not in prep for any competition at the moment so I have leeway to play!
 


The book by Carol Alt doesn't promote any one type of Raw Diet.  It includes how to incorporate meat, dairy, seafood into a Raw lifestyle.  This I found extremely interesting, probably due to my love of sashimi!

I did make this recipe from RawMazing this week.
I used my own variation on the guacamole recipe, but those corn chips?!
Delicious!
Mine were nowhere as pretty, but they were tasty as all get out!

Truckin' Along & my 666th Post?!

 Lunch Yesterday
I have been craving the steamed shrimp plate at a local Chinese restaurant.
So, I recreated it with some shrimp that I boiled, steamed veg, 1/2 cup brown rice, and topped with fresh grated ginger, rice vinegar and low sodium soy sauce.  It wasn't actually half bad!

Invigorated and motivated!

I don't know what it took.
I'm not sure why I was so out of it.
I have no clue whatsoever what happened.
Here I have been, though, on it.
I am looking forward to gym time.
I am searching out some tumbling teaching.
(I have a friend who is a performer, aerialist, acrobat who will be willing to help, but she is always so super booked with her money making performances, which include lots of traveling.  She is one of the lucky ones who makes a living do it!)
I am looking up competitions for next year that would be doable.
Really there are only a few left between this month and next month that have a fitness category.
I know that I want to drastically improve my routine.
I know that I still have to continue to improve my physique.
Although, I feel like it is ultimately better than my first competition as I have just begun to lean out some to see how I look after months of trying to bulk & build some muscle.
So, that's that.

Over the past year, I have noticed when I do gain my fat, it's in my lats and darn arse!

Seeing a teeny something

I totally need to get someone else to take a pick of my back.
I could only get half of that sucker trying to take a picture by myself in the bathroom mirror.
Perhaps, I should try again at the gym where the mirrors are huge, and I'm sure to catch the whole thing.
I still get embarrassed trying to take gym shots.
I usually am going as quick as possible when no one is around to try and catch a snap.
